The Outcomes
After the Forum, what happens next?
The Forum is only the start of collaborative efforts to realize the programme of action from the International Conference on Population and Development and the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The intent is to identify successful strategies and build a powerful base of diverse organizations to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights. Drawing on insights from regional consultations and the over 2,000 applications from every region of the world, participants at the Forum will produce two documents: a call to action for policymakers and donors and a compilation of the most promising strategic options for nongovernmental organizations and networks.
Where will you send the Berlin Call to Action and Strategic Options compilation?
Both documents will be posted on the Global Partners in Action Web site and formatted for broader distribution to the media, national-level policymakers and NGO leaders. A key audience for the Berlin Call to Action will be the 2009 International Parliamentarians' Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action in Addis Ababa at the end of October. We are compiling a list of important meetings where we can discuss the Call to Action with policymakers and the Strategic Options compilation with NGOs. We welcome your suggestions.
How can my organization contribute to seeing that the Berlin Call to Action and Strategic Options compilation make a difference?
You can contribute in several ways:Make a commitment—for yourself or your organization—to see that governments and donors realize the potential of the ICPD POA and the urgency of securing access to health and rights to promote social and economic development. Develop your own action plan.
Issue a news release that puts the Berlin Call to Action into context for your community or country.
Write an opinion piece, policy brief, blog or commentary on the Berlin Call to Action and priorities for achieving the ICPD POA. Showcase your own successes in seeing the POA become a reality.
Hold a community forum to discuss strategic options that might be applicable to your own agenda and concerns.
Post the Berlin Call to Action and Strategic Options compilation on your own Web site or on the wall of your organization.
Begin thinking about and discussing what will succeed the ICPD POA in 2015—what are the main issues that the world must address?
