Berlin is considered as one of the safest and most tolerant cities in Europe. A great number of nationalities live peacefully together in Berlin. In general walking in the streets at night or riding at night on bus, tram or subway is possible without any difficulty. Despite several press reports racial attacks in Berlin are quite rare.

Like in any other city in the world visitors and tourists in Berlin should use their common sense when in crowded places, public buses, trams or in the subway: Also in Berlin pickpockets are on the way. Therefore it is recommended not to keep large amounts of cash in your hand. Keep your passport and personal belongings in a safe place (underneath your clothes). In case of emergency on each platform of the suburban railway (“S-Bahn”) and of each subway station (“U-Bahn”) you find red panic buttons or emergency devices labelled “SOS/Notruf”.

If you feel ill during your stay in Berlin don’t hesitate to contact am member of the service staff or of the conference office in the hotel. They will aim to help you. If needed, medical doctors, hospitals, dentists and pharmacies are not far away.
