Title: Advocacy for Resource Mobilization in Asia and the Pacific
Host: Asia Pacific Alliance (APA) for ICPD, Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW)
Room: Estrel Hall C

The session will involve a panel discussion with speakers presenting on the successes and challenges in advocating for increased resources to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in the diverse and dynamic region of Asia and the Pacific. While some countries in the region are home to donors of great strategic and financial importance, in many other countries in the region, there is a significant unmet need while many donors are phasing out. The panel will look at the unique Asia-Pacific needs and context and innovative ways to engage donors and build practical networks for advocacy. In addition, speakers will also be focusing on what the unfinished agenda is in terms of SRHR in the region, and in terms of strengthening the health systems, both from a grassroots and research perspectives, and what the focus of advocacy and funding should be. Overall, the session will have a special focus on future strategies and work towards achieving objectives set in the ICPD Programme of Action.

Title: Population Dynamics, SRHR and Climate Change: Why do linkages matter
Host: German Development Cooperation Theme group on SRHR (BMZ, GTZ, KfW, DSW, InWent, DED)
Room: Estrel Hall A

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), anthropogenic climate change – induced by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and land use change – is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Until recently, linkages between population dynamics and climate change had been largely ignored in the international debate on climate change strategies. However, in light of the current global negotiations on climate change mitigation and adaptation, there has been growing interest in exploring the linkages with population dynamics and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Title: Female Condom Programming: breaking down the barriers
Host: Universal Access to Female Condom (UAFC) Joint Programme and World Population Foundation
Room: Estrel Hall C

  1. Because many people judge the female condom without ever seeing, let alone using one, we will give a female condom demonstration. The different prejudices will be discussed with the audience while showing the different female condom models.

  2. Research findings on female condoms and female condom programming will be presented to ground the statements on evidence. Studies on the acceptability and effectiveness of female condom programming give insights in the need for the female condom.

  3. On the other side, barriers and challenges - such as stereotypes on women and sexuality; negative image of the product; costs of the female condom; lack of variety; lack of funding and funders - will be discussed.

  4. Breaking down the barriers by implementing a large-scale female condom programme: the best practice ‘Universal Access to Female Condom’ (UAFC) Joint Programme.

Title: Of Gods, Sex and Politics: Gender, Religion and Sexuality
Host: Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW)
Room: Estrel Hall C

Who decides what is right and wrong? What is ‘normal’ and not? What is illegal and legal? Who you can love? What happens in your bedroom, or your womb? What you can say or wear? Who and what receives funding? What programmes and services you get? These are some of the questions that this session on the inter-linkages of sexuality and religion will explore. Through various presentations from varied contexts across Asia, the session will examine how religion can shape and is filtered through powerful ideologies around gender and sexuality, and how it affects laws, policies and programmes, and ultimately, our personal lives. It will also aim to explore possibilities for innovative advocacy, policy and intervention-based work in the region to ensure achievement of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
